Holiday V1.05b - Final Update (hopefully) is Released
V1.05b - Final Update
So you're probably reading this having downloaded V1.03b from the Amiga Game Jam. I had a few comments saying the game looked unfinished, so I made a few changes to it. Unfortunately, this means that a 6MB Amiga (2MB chip + 4MB slow) struggles to play it now, and some of the music does not play, because of a lack of memory. So now the system requirements are 8MB to play it, and 10MB if you want everything to pre-load and run quickly (with 8MB, the music still struggles). I did not want this to happen, and I've included V1.03b here on my Holiday page, in case people find memory is an issue.
V1.03c - I added some more hidden click boxes, which come up with text when players click on some parts of some images. These are usually just one-liners, but it means that almost every screen in the game now has some hidden message for players to find. Changed the intro music to Holiday by Madonna. I also fixed some 'pathway' bugs on the beach, so players can click 'Left' and it goes Left. Tons of other small fixes, especially to the radio. Also added and fixed the Burp and Hickup sound effect if the player clicks on them with no music playing. I considered added a 'Step' or 'Walk' sound effect, but this would happen each time the panel is drawn (due to how the game is coded), so it did not sound good.
V1.04 - I removed a screen from the game, and used the memory gained to add an inter-mission screen, which comes up at the end of each day. This shows the players score, a few stats, and also a rating for that day - so the player knowns how well they did with the missions. The music is switched off during this screen, so the player gets to take a break.
V1.05
- Changed the game period date back to 1988. The idea for this game I think came in 1990, but I also took my first Holiday in 1988, so this is when the game is set. Hence the 1980s radio. I had the date as 2018 because that's when the photos were taken, but then I changed it back.
- Added labels to some buttons. So the Beach Library now has a 'Sign'. The South Beach now has a 'FAQ'.
- Added a 'Help' text icon half-way down 'The Strip'. This gives the top 10 clues on how to play the game, if players are struggling to get into it.
- Fixed scoring bugs on day 6, and 7. This is a mystery why the game gives double score points on certain days. I'm guessing I gave 500 bonus points for reaching Day 6, but I cant find it in the code. If the player double-clicked the button by mistake, it also doubled the points, so hopefully I've sorted some of those issues out. Any bonus points will just have to stay in the game as a bonus.
- Added some headings and separators to the intro text, and removed the 'boxed versions' C16+4 and AGA versions Joke sections from the intro text. Having those jokes in there might be confusing for casual readers, who might expect me to do those things. Also added a P.s to the mission brief, with some arrows to point to the day and temperature, after Amiga Bill failed to notice them.
- Fixed dining room so that meals last for 1hr. This is not a bug, just an aesthetic fix. The time would normally advance 1hr per activity, plus 5 minutes is added when the side panel is drawn. I just removed the extra 5 mins from the restaurant and also the Scuba, so it's just 1hr.
- Renamed Souvenirs on the Outdoor Flea market to something else. This is because one of the missions specifically needs the player to collect Souvenirs from the Indoor Market, so having two different items of the same type was confusing.
- Renamed Peninsula to omit 'fishing'. I think this screen also said Cliff Diving at one point, but I removed it because that would be dangerous in real life.
V1.05b - Added three more hidden click boxes, and a stats box in Room 2; showing collectables and drinks. Clicking on this also changes the radio station.
Re-worded one of the Water Ski lines on the sign at the Beach Library.
Changed the opening times of The Red Lion pub to 9am (was 10am) - even though most other places open at 8am.
V1.05b1 - The game did not stop the music when closing down correctly, so fixed it so that the music switches off now if the players quits from the title screens, the game over screens, or their room (and mostly the hotel). I didn't have the patience to fix the 'close' button on the other 70 rooms in the game, so if you want to quit, you can reload the game and then press quit again to stop the music.
